How to Compare Transformer Quotations Before Contract Award

To compare transformer quotations, first make the technical and delivery scopes equivalent. A lower price may leave ventilation, testing or transport work with your team. Separate those differences before ranking bids. Then compare loss profiles against your operating duty, so the award reflects what you will install and operate, rather than the equipment price alone.

Which differences must be resolved before comparing price?

Resolve rating, voltage, frequency, connections, cooling, losses and delivery scope before comparing prices. Give every bidder the same specification revision. Put alternatives and exclusions on separate lines, then identify their effect on installation and cost. You can only make a useful price comparison when the equipment duties and work boundaries match.

Use the oil-immersed transformer category to start the enquiry, then check the model's data sheet. Confirm that the rating covers your site and cooling mode. A different enclosure or terminal position may change foundations, cable routes and building work.

Keep the quotation revision beside every copied value. When a price changes, check whether losses, accessories or delivery terms changed too. Otherwise, your worksheet can combine figures from different proposals into a bid that no supplier submitted.

Settle mandatory requirements before scoring preferences. A material restriction or installation limit needs a clear technical answer. Record a lower-priced alternative separately so its departures remain visible through the award decision.

For example, Yuantong supplied a 6,300 kVA OLTC power transformer to Tesla LLP in Kazakhstan.

How should copper, aluminum and loss guarantees be compared?

Copper alone does not guarantee lower transformer losses than aluminum. Compare complete designs using separate loss guarantees, temperature conditions and termination details. Conductor cross-section, winding geometry and cooling all influence performance. Treat the material as a construction requirement, then judge the finished transformer against your electrical duty and the project's material restrictions.

Copper has lower electrical resistivity than aluminum, but designers can change conductor dimensions and current density. Check the material in each winding and at the terminals. Connections and joint arrangements deserve attention alongside the loss figures.

Record P0 at the stated voltage and frequency. Record Pk at rated current and the agreed reference temperature. Keep tapping and auxiliary consumption visible. A single efficiency percentage can hide the conditions behind an apparently attractive comparison.

An S11 distribution transformer and a cast-resin transformer can be alternatives only if both suit the installation. Include enclosure, ventilation and liquid-containment work in their respective totals. Compare them against the same complete installed boundary.

Name IEC 60076-1 or IEEE C57.12.00 where selected by the project. Keep the contract edition and utility additions beside the schedule. The test and evidence list should identify how the requirements will be checked.

How can operating duty reverse a loss comparison?

A lower no-load loss can be outweighed by higher load loss when current rises. Evaluate both designs over the same energized hours and current profile. Calculate each interval separately, then add the energy losses. This shows which loss profile suits your duty, instead of assuming the lowest value in one column always wins.

Use estimated loss in kW = P0 + x² × Pk, where x is current divided by rated current. The table uses matching 1,000 kVA, 33/0.4 kV, 50 Hz duties and a common reference basis. It excludes temperature changes, waveform effects and auxiliaries.

Comparison item Design A Design B
No-load loss P0 1.0 kW 1.4 kW
Rated-current load loss Pk 8.0 kW 6.0 kW
Loss at x = 0.25 1.50 kW 1.775 kW
Energy at x = 0.25 for 6,000 h 9,000 kWh 10,650 kWh
Loss at x = 0.75 5.50 kW 4.775 kW
Energy at x = 0.75 for 6,000 h 33,000 kWh 28,650 kWh
Equal-loss current fraction Approximately 0.447 Same crossover point

Sample values are for explanation only; the project specification governs.

These are two independent constant-current scenarios, each lasting 6,000 hours. They are not a combined annual profile. Design A has lower calculated loss at light current, while B has lower loss at heavier current.

For variable operation, retain each current fraction and its duration. Squaring average current does not reproduce the average of squared current. Separate energized standby from de-energized hours, because no-load loss continues during standby.

The BPA transformer report explains no-load and current-dependent losses. For capitalization, use the owner's approved factors and units. Keep the energy calculation separate from electricity-price, discount-rate and maintenance assumptions so you can trace the resulting ownership-cost comparison.

How should delivery, testing and commercial exclusions be aligned?

Match delivery point, packing, transport, inspection and documents before comparing commercial totals. State the Incoterms rule, edition and named place. Keep payment, warranty, acceptance and schedule conditions in separate entries. This makes each exclusion visible and shows which work you or another contractor must cover beyond the quoted transformer price.

Use the ICC explanation of Incoterms responsibilities to clarify delivery responsibilities. The named location matters to the scope. A short trade abbreviation cannot replace the rest of the purchase terms, including payment, document approval and acceptance arrangements.

Check the transport state and loose-accessory list. Separate optional recorders, extra reports and witness attendance from the base scope. Each can affect price and coordination, even when both bids describe the same transformer rating.

Use the factory testing page to discuss records, then list the reports included in the order. Identify design evidence, supplied-unit records and additional witnessing separately. Confirm the schedule's start event so lead times are compared from the same basis.

Yuantong offers customs and logistics assistance. State the destination and services you need, so the quotation can show a clear delivery boundary.

What should you send for comparable transformer quotations?

Send one technical package, response worksheet and loss-evaluation method to every bidder. Include site interfaces, test records, delivery responsibilities and a departure log. Require a quotation revision against each response. Your award recommendation should be reproducible from those documents, with the final price tied to the configuration you evaluated and accepted.

Include the electrical duty, load profile, connection drawing and site layout. Label assumptions and missing inputs. Resolve the mandatory gaps first, then compare the price consequences of accepted alternatives within the same installed scope.

For renewable duties, use the wind and solar farm transformer application page to describe the context and attach the operating profile. Low-output periods and energized standby can change the loss ranking. A nominal plant-power figure does not capture that duty.

Yuantong provides installation guidance and training. Include site-work boundaries in the discussion when enclosure, cooling or access affects the choice.

Use the project quotation enquiry and attach the common worksheet. Carry clarifications into the purchase specification. Before award, check price, guarantees, accessory lists and document scope together against the final quotation revision.

What questions remain before awarding a transformer order?

Close loss, report and scope gaps before recommending an award. The final quotation should describe the same configuration used in your comparison. Keep its assumptions and accepted departures together, so another reviewer can follow the decision and identify which installation, energy and maintenance costs were included in the evaluation.

Does the lowest purchase price establish the lowest ownership cost?

No. Compare equal installed scope, energy losses, auxiliaries and maintenance under one financial method. Purchase price is only one part of that calculation. A changed scope boundary can reverse an early ranking.

Does a copper winding guarantee lower transformer losses?

No. Compare the complete designs using P0, Pk and their reference conditions. Check winding and termination materials separately. The material name alone does not establish the loss performance you will buy.

Can an efficiency percentage replace separate loss guarantees?

No. You need separate P0 and Pk values, plus their conditions. An efficiency figure describes one operating point. Separate losses let you evaluate a changing current profile and energized standby.

Should an old test report be accepted with any offered model?

No. Match the report's design and construction to the bid. Identify any differences and the evidence supporting its use. Keep serial-number records separate when they are required for the supplied transformer.

How should unresolved quotation differences be recorded?

Use a requirement-linked departure log. Record the bidder's answer, technical decision and price consequence. Recheck the comparison after revisions, so the award uses the scope and quotation that will become the order.
